.In Medieval Europe there were constantly wars and disputes happening (commonly about religion), there were a lot of dangers so castles were built and soldiers were trained to protect the monarch’s life. The soldiers were highly respected for their brave actions but still strange tactics were put in place to make sure that the soldiers didn't do anything cowardly, for example if an army had ran away from a battle sometimes the soldier in charge would order his army to kill every tenth person in hope that this would stop the army from running away. Treason was the worst crime to commit at this time because as well as other armies threatening the Monarch's life and position someone who committed high treason was also threatening the Monarch's life or position which was considered the most terrible a person living in the Middle ages could possibly do.
